Why do I plan to file legislation that will allow for expanded NH LNG access?
It’s simple math. A few key findings from the linked UC Berkeley study STRONGLY suggest that NH would benefit from more cheap Natural Gas delivered to New Hampshire via either pipeline or an expanded coastal LNG terminal. These lower natural gas prices would benefit NH as soon as energy producers (LNG-fired plants) see a commitment from the legislature and Governor that more natural gas will be a definitive contributor to the long term economic growth strategy of our state.
As a member of the House Science, Technology, and Energy Committee I plan to continue to lead this effort:
- Every single month between 2007 and 2025, the U.S. natural gas price was below or equal to the price in Europe and Japan. Relative to Europe, U.S. prices have been $9 lower per Mcf on average. Relative to Japan, U.S. prices have been $11 lower.
- Shale gas has saved U.S. natural gas consumers $4.5-$5.3 trillion since 2007, equivalent to savings of $237-$276 billion annually.
- 39% of savings went to electric power customers, with the other 61% going to end-use gas consumption by industrial, residential, and commercial customers.
- In terms of geography, Texas has saved more than any other state and Louisiana has saved the most per capita. Why Not NH??? It’s in the hands of the voters and our legislature and Governor.
