The future is NOW…As in RIGHT NOW. While this article is slightly optimistic, it is far closer to reality than N-years out. In fact, we have a microreactor company right here in NH, StarCube. The Starcube reactor design will produce 10 megawatts of electricity and has a 7+ year life. This is enough electricity generated on an acre of land that will power an entire community including businesses and municipal facilities at a cost that is expected to be competitive. Startcube is in early discussions with multiple prospective sites including in NH. What’s in the way? As one can imagine, any new technology will encounter a wall of regulations and existing infrastructure as well as a need to spread knowledge in communities about safety, disruption, availability, cost and overall community impact.
More than one design will “win” and when they do, we will all win because this is an electricity source that is safe, carbon-emissions free, modest in size and form factor and very importantly, cost effective. Natural gas will provide a decadal bridge to broad implementation of this technology. Feasibility, economics and common sense are creating the clear momentum behind this reality.
